Homer and Marge Simpson from the animated sitcom "The Simpsons" are officially divorcing.

The show's executive producer Al Jean revealed to Variety that in the premiere episode of the 27th season of the show, Homer and Marge will "legally separate." The episode, "Every Man's Dream," will explain how Homer's narcolepsy caused "an incredible strain on the marriage."

After the separation, Homer will start a new relationship with his pharmacist, who is voiced by "Girls" star, Lena Dunham. Dunham's HBO co-stars will reportedly be making cameos on this season of "The Simpsons."

Jean revealed other plots for this season, such as the presidential campaign.

"We're definitely going to have Homer vote in 2016. One aspect of the pickup that made me happy is that Homer can vote again," Jean said. "We have an episode coming up where Lisa befriends a homeless woman who turns out to be an incredible singer. The woman's voiced by Kate McKinnon, but the singing is done by Natalie Maines. In another episode, Spider Pig makes his return. Sideshow Bob appears in a segment, and we finally see him do something he's wanted to do for 25 years. And we have an episode based on the film 'Boyhood.' It's a flashback/flashforward about Bart. We go to various points in his life and his life to come which I think came out really well."

Although the show has had many plot twists over nearly three decades on air, this one is arguably one of the biggest. The announcement of the separation also came right after the show revealed that Bart Simpson will be murdered by Sideshow Bob (Kelsey Grammer) in the Halloween episode. However, since it will be a one-off episode, Bart will return to the series afterwards.

There is currently no word on whether or not Homer and Marge will stay divorced.

"The Simpsons" premieres on Sept. 27 on FOX.
