A Colorado rancher became an overnight genius following serious head injuries sustained when she fell into a ravine.

Leigh Erceg, who was manning a ranch in north-western Colorado until her fall, loved sport but had no interest for math and art. Her best friend also describes her as an extrovert and friendly before she fell on a fateful day in 2009 while feeding the chickens at the ranch.

The 47-year old Leigh had severe injuries in the brain and spinal cord. Doctors were not sure if she would ever walk. However Erceg made a swift recovery but the damage to her brain turned her into a genius. She acquired Savant Syndrome, which is having enhanced cognitive ability in math and art, according to ABC News.

Erceg now doles out poetry with ease even as she solves complex mathematical equations. Art for her is the way to describe what she sees.

The fall not only transformed Erceg into a genius but also robbed her of her past. After the she recovered from the fall, Erceg did not know her mother nor she remember her life before the fall. She also could feel no emotion and was initially diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

Doctors at University of Miami who studied Erceg said that Erceg was the only woman in the world who they know had acquired Savant Syndrome.

The transformation has however left Erceg lonely. She relies on her best friend from fifth-grade Amber Anastasio, to piece the past together.
