An official celebration was held in Liberia after the country was declared free of the Ebola virus.

The announcement of an 'Ebola Free Liberia' was made on Saturday by the government and the World Health Organization- forty two days since the last case was reported.

The Ebola virus ended up being one of the worst epidemics in Liberia claiming the lives of over 4,700 people in the course of one year.

Liberia also had more Ebola related deaths than any other West African country.

To celebrate the occasion, the government declared a public holiday where students and workers hit the streets carrying signs and posters with messages like 'We are the Winner' and 'We will always overcome.'

People danced to the tune of drums and could also be seen proudly waving the Liberian flag.

Even as Liberia is now Ebola free, they need to be cautious over the next few months since the outbreak in neighboring countries like Guinea and Sierra Leone is still not over.

The Ebola outbreak was first reported in March 2014 and quickly became rampant in many parts of West Africa.

More than 11000 people from Nigeria, Mali, Sierra Leone and Liberia lost their lives while a total of 26,720 cases were reported.

Related symptoms include diarrhoea, bleeding, rashes, vomiting and fever.
