SurveyMonkey Chief Executive Dave Goldberg died on Friday at a private resort in Mexico after suffering severe head trauma and blood loss in a gym related accident.

According to state prosecutors, Goldberg (47) reportedly "fell off the treadmill and cracked his head open."

"His relatives have indicated that he went to work out, and that they became concerned when he did not come back," the state prosecutor said.

"They went looking for him and found him in a pool of blood next to a treadmill, apparently after he fell and struck his head at the hotel gym," the official added.

Goldberg was said to have had vital signs when he was discovered but died later after being admitted to a medical center in Nuevo Vallarta.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said Goldberg was "an amazing person."

"I am glad I got to know him. My thoughts and prayers are with Sheryl and her family."

Goldberg was one of silicon valleys most admired entrepreneurs. The poll taking company Survery Money flourished into a $2 billion business under his leadership.

He married Sandberg in 2004 and they have two children. The family is holding an invitation only memorial service on Tuesday.

In keeping with Dave's lifelong hatred for ties, men who are attending the service have been asked to wear open collars.
