Microsoft, on Wednesday kicked off its annual developer's conference Build where it made a series of announcements and which made it obvious that the company is headed into a new direction.

Here are top five announcements made by Microsoft at Build 2015:

1. Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Edge will be the new default Internet browser on Windows machines. It replaces Internet Explorer. The new browser comes with few cool features such as showing a site preview simply by hovering over its tab.

The company said it will be easier for developers to port extensions across from Chrome over to Edge.

2. HoloLens Is Real And Runs Unity

At Build, Microsoft unveiled more details about the HoloLens, detailing how 'holographic computing' will work. The lens will run Windows 10 apps.

3. Visual Studio for Mac and Linux (Free)

Microsoft also unveiled the first version of Visual Studio for Mac and Linux. The code editor called Visual Studio Code is available for free from Wednesday and will help developers make .NET code on these platforms as well.

4. Carrier billing

Windows platform users will now able to purchase apps without credit or debit card and will be charged via carrier instead. The feature is available for all Windows devices.

5. Windows 10 Continuum

Windows Phone is a Windows 10 PC as well. Users can plug in an HDMI display as well as a mouse and keyboard to use it like a normal computer.

However, the "classic" Windows desktop programs cannot be installed on a phone though.
