Chris Evan and Jeremy Renner issued a public apology after their offhand, sexist comments about Black Widow in a promotional interview for Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron met a lot of criticisms online.

"Yesterday we were asked about the rumors that Black Widow wanted to be in a relationship with both Hawkeye and Captain America. We answered in a very juvenile and offensive way that rightfully angered some fans. I regret it and sincerely apologize," Evans who played Captain America told EW.

Renner also issued a statement saying, "I am sorry that this tasteless joke about a fictional character offended anyone. It was not meant to be serious in any way. Just poking fun during an exhausting and tedious press tour."

Evans and Renner were both in an earlier interview with Digital Spy when they were asked about interesting plot details in the Avengers: Age of Ultron particularly in the brewing romance between Black Widow played by Scarlett Johansson and Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner (The Hulk).

Aside from the new team-up, Black Widow is earlier linked with Captain America and Hawkeye.

When the interviewer asked both of them to comment on this aspect, this is what they said:

"She's a slut," Renner said jokingly.

Evans later joined Renner's joke further saying, "I was going to say something along that line, she's a complete whore. ... She'll flirt with everybody, leading everybody on," Hollywood Reporter said.

According to CNN, fans of the Marvel movie aired negative feedback on Twitter. Some insisting that they should apologize.

"I didn't spend 8 hours of my life yesterday watching a marvel marathon for chris evans and jeremy renner to be problematic misogynists."

"The Renner/Evans video clip is evidence of how deeply ingrained sexist attitudes are in our culture and how oblivious men can be to that."

"Do I think Evans and Renner meant ill? No. Do I think they did something sexist because they weren't thinking and were wrong to do so? Yes."
