Jon Stewart's last day as the host of Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" will be August 6, the comedian announced on Monday's program.

"My last Daily Show program will be August the 6th. I'll be wearing a suit, I will more than likely be showered...," he said. Once the audience starts to boo, he adds, "I"m sorry, I'll be wearing overalls and I won't shower." The crowd then responds with cheers.

Stewart, who has hosted the show for 16 years, announced his departure in February. In March, Comedy Central hired South African comedian, Trevor Noah, as his replacement. Noah, who was criticized for tweets that he wrote in the past, will take over sometime during the fall. The show "will go on hiatus" between Stewart's departure and Noah's start, a spokesman for Comedy Central said.

Sources claimed, according to CNN Money, that executives wanted the hand-off to occur in late fall whereas Stewart wanted to leave closer to July. They ended up compromising on the August 6 date. Stewart's contract expires in September.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, Stewart explained why he wanted to leave the show.

He said, "It's not like I thought the show wasn't working any more, or that I didn't know how to do it. It was more, 'Yup, it's working. But I'm not getting the same satisfaction,'" he said. "These things are cyclical. You have moments of dissatisfaction, and then you come out of it and it's okay. But the cycles become longer and more entrenched, and that's when you realize, 'Okay, I'm on the back side of it now.'

He added that some downtime at home would be nice.

"It would be nice to be home when my little elves get home from school, occasionally."

Stewart has not discussed his future plans after "The Daily Show."
