Nearly 1 million people placed an order for an Apple Watch on the first day it was available, according to a research firm estimation.

Research firm Slice Intelligence based the estimation on e-commerce receipt data from 9,080 online shoppers. They further estimated that each US Apple Watch buyer ordered on average 1.3 watches, spending US$503.83 per watch.

According to estimates, around two-thirds of pre-orders were for the aluminum Sport. The report did not feature gold Apple Watch Edition as not enough orders were placed for it.

The report added that more than 70 percent of pre-orders were for the larger, 42mm watch size.

Slice said that 72 per cent of pre-order customers surveyed had bought an Apple product in the past two years, while 21 per cent pre-ordered an iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus on its release in late 2014, SCMP noted.

Apple Watch prices start at $349 and stretch up to $17,000.

Apple is yet to release any order data.
