The city of Elmwood Park, NJ is trying to recover and make sense of tragedy after learning that a 100-year-old man killed his wife with an ax before taking his own life.

NJ.com reports that 100-year-old Michael Juskin killed his 88-year-old wife Rosalia as she slept Easter night. After assaulting his wife with ax, Juskin went into the home's bathroom and committed suicide using a knife. It is unclear how exactly he killed himself.

It is unknown exactly why the murder-suicide occurred, but the couple had a history of domestic violence and disturbances, according to NJ.com. The bodies were discovered by a family member who then called the police.

While it may seem unprecedented for a 100-year-old to kill someone in such a violent and physical manner, the couple's neighbors said Ruskin was in good health and physical shape. They often saw him walking about through town for exercise, while his wife was a regular gardener. The couple is also said to have spent a large amount of time in Florida.

An investigation into the matter by local police is still ongoing.

Oddly, it is the third murder-suicide involving knives and husbands and wives in New Jersey in the last several months.

In one incident, a husband killed his wife as their infant son slept in another room, according to NJ.com. In the other incident a husband stabbed his wife to death before setting her room on fire. He then killed himself as the flames consumed their home.
