GoPro - a popular action camera maker - has obtained a patent for a cube-shaped "housing" to hold and give users access to a cube-shaped camera. The patent was filed in January 2014.

According to the patent, the gadget contains latching and mounting mechanisms to secure the camera and housing. The device also contains multiple openings in the body of the case which probably is to accommodate the camera interface.

"These features allow the square camera to be inserted and secured in the square camera housing in one of a plurality of orientations relative to the square camera housing," the patent said.

A GoPro spokesman told Re/code that engineers have been working on a square camera for several years but had nothing to announce.

"GoPro files patents like these to protect our technology and intellectual property," the company told Re/code.

Recently, Roku announced a GoPro Channel-your one-stop video destination for on-demand, "unique" content.

The company also recently collaborated with the National Hockey League and the NHL Players' Association for player-level views of the on-the-ice action.
