Chelsea Clinton gave birth to a girl late Friday. The former first daughter announced the arrival on her Twitter and Facebook accounts. The baby has been named Charlotte.

"Marc and I are full of love, awe and gratitude as we celebrate the birth of our daughter, Charlotte Clinton Mezvinsky," Clinton said in the post, referring to husband Marc Mezvinsky, reports Reuters.

Charlotte is the first grandchild of former President Bill Clinton and first lady Hillary Clinton.

The tweets by Chelsea were later retweeted by the new grandparents.

Clinton was keenly looking forward to becoming grandmother for the first time and she had said that she did not want to take any decision regarding another campaign until the baby arrived. She even termed her becoming grandmother as her "most exciting title yet". Hilary clinton is considering a presidentil bid in the coming elections.

Former president Bill Clinton also was very keen to become a grandfather.

"Every day I get up and I say, 'You have to remember whose child this is. Do not interfere. Be there when you are welcome. Be loving but not judgmental," Clinton said at the annual Clinton Global Initiative, days before the baby's arrival, reports the Associated Press.

Chelsea Clinton is the vice chairwoman of the Bill, Hillary & Chelsea Clinton Foundation.

She married Marc Mezvinsky, an investment banker in 2010.

Clinton had announced her pregnancy in April at an event in New York on female empowerment.

"I just hope I will be as good a mom to my child and, hopefully, children as my mom was to me," she said at the event, reports AP.
