Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al Abadi said Thursday that Iraqi intelligence had uncovered a plot by the Islamic State militants to attack subways in the United States and Paris.

Abadi said that intelligence officials in Baghdad informed him about the plot. Foreign fighters including U.S. and French nationals who joined the Islamic state were behind the plan, he said.

"They plan to have attacks in the metros of Paris and the U.S.," Abadi told reporters while in New York for the annual meeting of the U.N. General Assembly. "I asked for more credible information. I asked for names. I asked for details, for cities, you know, dates. And from the details I have received, yes, it looks credible," he said, reports Reuters.

While declining to give information on possible locations of the attacks in the U.S., Abadi said the threat had not been thwarted yet.

A senior Iraqi officials said it was true that the Iraqi intelligence had uncovered terror plots by the militants and Iraq had informed the security officials of its partners. He said that a complete assessment regarding the genuineness of the information was going on. The intelligence officials were also investigating how far the militants had implemented the plan, he added, reports the Associated Press.

However, Senior U.S. officials said that they had no knowledge about the plot by Islamic State to attack subway systems in the U.S. and Paris.

The US National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said: "We have not confirmed such a plot, and would have to review any information from our Iraqi partners before making further determinations. We take any threat seriously and always work to corroborate information we receive from our partners," she said, reports BBC.
