A mind-blowing article published in the website Mother Jones tried to contest the eating norms that humanity has been practicing since then. Scholar-historian Abigail Carrol argued that eating three meals a day is purely a construct and a European invention originally imposed to Native American settlers during the Medieval Ages.

In an article by Keira Butler, she mentioned Carroll's theory found in the scholar's book Three Squares: The Invention of the American Meal. It claims that the idea of having three meals a day and some light snacks is purely from European colonizers when they noticed that the natives are very spontaneous about their diet and the schedule less rigid. Further, the natives have been observed to fast when food was scarce.

According to the article, this odd practice is seen as 'uncivilized' and as an object of 'entertainment' and mockery by the Europeans.

A report from Newsbuster mentioned an email written by Carrol herself saying "Civilized people ate properly and boundaried their eating, thus differentiating themselves from the animal kingdom, where grazing is the norm."

Carrol further explained that this meal pattern evolves as time goes in accordance to the changing lifestyle patterns of humans.

"As people became more prosperous, they added meat to breakfast and dinner. After the Industrial Revolution, when people began to work away from home, the midday meal became a more casual affair, and the cooked meal shifted to the end of the day, when workers came home. Carroll said in the email.

However, she asserted that this practice does not guarantee to give overall health.

"A quirk of history has meant this pattern has been heralded as healthy, when in fact there is no evidence for this assertion. For example, breakfast is considered the most important meal of the day largely due to advertising campaigns by cereal and juice companies," the scholar said as mentioned in Daily Mail.

According to Frontpage Mag, Mother Jones is known for publishing articles with left-wing leanings. It is named after the socialist organizer Mary Harris Jones.
