Whether you're a small business owner, recruiter, or an international company, hiring and recruiting is essential. In a growing digital age where more and more people are entering the job market, the selection of new hires only increases.

Let's face it - not every applicant has the skills and work ethic required to be a beneficial addition to your team. It's difficult to weed out the qualified from the unqualified, but these few tricks may help the process.

1- Consider Assessments

Assessments are an excellent way to test candidates and separate the qualified from the less qualified. Assessments can be specific to a company or role and give a clear example of the candidate's abilities.

These can be written tests, idea pitches, or written assignments. The possibilities are endless. Another kind of assessment is a personality test. It's crucial that the type of person hired understands the company's culture and would make a good fit.

The last kind of assessment that depends on the company and its values is a drug test.  These tests help to determine if the applicant uses illicit substances. There are many types of drug tests so take the time to learn about each. It's crucial to respect an applicant's time and privacy so let all applicants know in the job description if any assessments like a written test or drug screening will be a requirement.

2- Write Detailed Job Descriptions

Most applicants search for jobs online using websites that match them with positions based on the description provided. A candidate may already want to work for a company and decide if they're a good fit based on the description.

With that said, a job description must be clear, accurate, and descriptive. A short, vague description that doesn't list out the job requirements makes any applicant seem qualified.

Also, make the job description match the vibe and culture of the company. Is the company more laid back? Is there an emphasis on fun? Is it a more serious culture that values professionalism above all else? No matter what, it's essential to communicate the workplace culture through the job description's tone.

3- Step Up the Interview Skills

Interview skills are critical when it comes to hiring and recruiting. An interview that is boring, too easy, or unnecessarily tricky can easily make an applicant disinterested.

Remember, interviews go both ways. The applicant is interviewing the recruiter just as much as the recruiter is interviewing them.

The better the questions are, the more insight the recruiter will receive from the candidate. Stray away from the basic question like, "what are your greatest strengths or weaknesses?" Most candidates have heard these questions multiple times and have an answer prepared and ready to go.

Instead, ask questions that make them think and require honesty. Ask about past mistakes and how they learned, the most challenging tasks on the job, and their favorite part of the industry.

Lastly, make sure to always listen to the applicant's questions and make the interview as conversational as possible.

4- Monitor Company Reviews

Lastly, with websites like Glassdoor existing, applicants can now see reviews for a company written by past employees. If a business doesn't value their workers, the new possible applicant will know and decide to take their talents and skills elsewhere.

Be sure to treat all employees well, and the reviews will never be a problem.

Conclusion

There are many ways to ensure that a company has the best, most qualified workers on its team. Following these four easy tips will make a company a desirable place to work with employees who love their work.
