Home is so much more than where the heart is this year. For many, it has become their safe haven, their office, their child's classroom, and so much more. It doesn't matter how big or small the space is, either, your home has become the go-to for almost everything. For those who don't have spare rooms to set up as an office, who don't have areas they can designate for their kids, and generally those who feel pent up and claustrophobic, this guide is for you. You can transform your home and make it work.

Make it the ultimate home office. Make it the perfect place to study while you pursue your career. Make it a great location for your kids, for your hobbies, for your health and wellbeing. Small spaces need to be multipurpose, and with this guide you can get the most out of your home space.

Organization

In order to make a small space work for working, studying, and even for relaxation and hobbies, you need to be organized. Your home is going to be very multi-purpose, but to keep it neat it needs to be easy to organize. Do this with your data, and your supplies:

Data

Organization is one of the most important ingredients for your success. It makes a world of a difference to be able to find the documents that you need, when you need them. In work, this organization can occur entirely on cloud-documents and be regulated with very strict rules and templates.

In your personal life, especially in things like an online education, that organization is entirely up to you. You don't need to just keep your notes in order for your degree, after all. What you learn in an online Christian psychology degree, for example, can and should be referred to again and again as you either start a career in coaching, counseling, or psychology.

With that in mind you'll want to have two organization systems.

  1. Online

  2. Paper Files

Before you start, create a very simple organizational method for your notes. You can use color tags, word tags, and folders to keep everything organized.

Once you complete a unit, do yourself a favor and create a master document that covers everything you learned, but in your own words. This will help you with any exams or assignments, and act as a great cheat sheet if you need to refer back later on in your career.

Supplies

Supplies are definitely difficult to keep organized, because unlike data you have to deal with the physical mess of it all. Investing in storage units, boxes, and other organizers is important. Think vertically when it comes to storage, and try to invest in multi-use furniture that offers plenty of storage opportunities.

It should be simple to take out everything you need for work, and then to switch when you need to study, and then to switch again when you want to wind down with a craft.

Dedicated Office Space

In every situation you will need dedicated office space. If you don't have a room specifically for this office, don't worry. Instead, you will need to subdivide another room so you have that space where you can be productive.

Just try to keep this out of your bedroom. You want your bedroom to be where you relax and wind down, not where you wind yourself up.

It should also ideally be where you can get a lot of natural light, which will work to naturally wake you up and keep you more productive whether you are working or studying.

Your hobbies can be done in your room, as they are part of your wind-down. This applies to kids, too. Keep any at-home learning out in the living room or at the kitchen table, and make your rooms the ones where they play and have fun. It will keep them focussed outside, and keep any mess contained.

Dedicated Relaxation Space

Making sure you have a dedicated space to work is so important. It's the same reason why you wouldn't want to have a TV in your bedroom. Instead of stimulating your mind, you want places where you can wind down and quiet down. Adopt relaxing hobbies and routines that allow you to relax and, most importantly, get a good night's rest. Separating spaces that allow this can help you stay productive and dedicated at your work at home study and career, while maintaining good health and wellbeing.
