A problem faced by many on Instagram is that Instagram does not allow you to save someone else's post. A logical solution to the problem would be to screenshot photos and forward it to whomever you want to.

There is not apparent problem in doing that but most followers would like to know whether the owner of the content get notified that they took a screenshot. To answer that question, let's consider the several aspects to it.

Does Instagram notify when one screenshots a post?

No, Instagram does not notify when someone screenshots someone else's post. Posts include the videos or photos someone posts on the home feed. One could simply screenshot a post to forward it or to save it, but another alternative is to bookmark the post and access it at a later date from the application. The only difference is that taking a screenshot will bring it to your device while bookmarking it will allow it to be accessed only from the application.

Does Instagram notify when one screenshots a story?

At the moment, Instagram does not notify when one screenshots a story but the feature was experimentally added in 2018. It failed in getting support and was very soon removed. So currently, if one screenshots any story that he/she likes, the owner will not know but do remember that features can change or be updated, so it is good to keep up with any changes.

If you want to access content from your story taken from the in-app camera, you can access the content from your profile page and click the archive icon after selecting the three-bar icon. The application by default saves the content you post on your story.

Does Instagram notify when one screenshots a DM?

DM refers to private messages between two people. The answer is yes, the other user is notified if you screenshot a DM. The notification feature however, is only applicable with disappearing content which includes videos and photos; i.e. expiring photos and videos can also be sent in DMs.

If you screenshot such a content, the delivery status for the other user will change to "screenshot" instead of "delivered" or "opened". This is not applicable to screenshots of entire conversations so you can screenshot conversations without letting the other know.

Does Instagram notify when one screenshots a record?

The answer is no, Instagram does not notify when one screenshots a record. This is the case for both DMs s well as record. Screenshot recording therefore can be done without letting the other user know that you are doing so. A clever strategy some use is screen recording the conversation and then taking a screenshot of the disappearing photo or video. This however, is a clear breach of privacy and must be avoided.

Taking screenshots is a very common practice on Instagram because most of the content here disappears quite quickly and cannot be saved. When one screenshots a post, a story or a record, the owner will not be notified but in disappearing content in DMs, they will be notified.
