Did you know that Canadians are getting an hour less of sleep than we did in 2005?

At the same time, we have seen insomnia among adult Canadians skyrocket by 42% from 2007 to 2015. Sleep deprivation is a big problem, which is why sleep aids have become big business

Our society has never had more products aimed at helping us sleep. Some of the biggest companies in the world have turned their attention to helping you get the rest you need with some aspect of their product. You can use your iPhone or your Fitbit to track and grade your sleep patterns.

So if you're still tossing and turning at night, you should consider investing in one of these three recent innovations.

1. The Mattress-in-a-Box

The mattress-in-a-box trend is red hot right now, and for good reason. If you want to get better rest and upgrade your mattress, you don't have to spend thousands of dollars at a department store anymore.

You can get a high-quality memory foam mattress delivered right to your home for a few hundred dollars. Buying online and directly from the manufacturer removes a lot of the middle-man-costs that drive up the price of a traditional retail store mattress.

This makes high-quality mattresses affordable for anyone, not just people with a few thousand dollars lying around. You also don't have to drive all the way to department stores or try to strap it to the roof of your car. You can shop online and have it delivered right to your door.

Your mattress is often one of the biggest factors in how comfortable you feel when you're trying to sleep. Experts recommend that you update your mattress every eight years or so. However, you should do it more frequently if you're over 40-years-old or have a history of any sort of back issues.

2. Sleep Apps

How would you like to fall asleep to soothing celebrity voices like Matthew McConaughey or Nick Offerman?

The Calm app has recruited an impressive roster of A-list orators to talk you to sleep every night. If that's not your cup of tea, there are also countless white noise apps to fill your bedroom with the calming sounds of rain on a window, an air conditioner's hum, or gentle waves on a beach.

You could also try mindfulness apps like Headspace. Recent studies have shown that people who embrace mindfulness have lower stress levels and find it easier to drift off to sleep at night.

You might think this flies in the face of all of those reports claiming that smartphones are the reason we can't sleep anymore. To be clear, the way we're using our smartphones in bed has been linked to sleep problems; not the actual phones themselves This includes things like the blue light from the screens throwing off our body's natural melatonin levels, or simply getting over-stimulated before bedtime.

You can use your phone as a sleep aid. Simply keep it on the nightstand and out of your hand, while ensuring the room is filled with soothing sounds instead of blue light. Just don't forget to set your alarm before you pass out.

3. Weighted Blankets

You may have seen these blankets advertised on social media. They started as a crowd-sourcing darling and the world is really starting to embrace them.

The extra weight of the blanket is designed to wrap you up in a glowing feeling of warmth and security. They are also called gravity blankets and they started out as a tool used by occupational therapists and psychiatrists. Now they're for anyone who wants to feel snug in bed or on the couch.

These blankets are not for everyone. In fact, they could be potentially very dangerous for children. However, the people that like them like them a lot.

All of these things can help contribute to a good night's sleep. However, you can't buy or download more sleep. If you could, we would all be much better rested.

The best way to consistently get a good night's sleep is to live a healthy lifestyle, while committing to a regular bedtime and a regular bedtime routine. Your sleep quality is reflective of your overall health. If you exercise and eat right, you will get healthy sleep. If not, you will struggle.

These gadgets can be helpful. But you are the one who ultimately decides how well you sleep every night.

Sweet dreams!
