Life is hectic, and sometimes it feels like we're running around non-stop. Depending on where you live, you may take public transportation to get from point A to point B. The perils of the New York Subway system and other notorious transit lines are a familiar story if you live in any major metropolis.

Owning a car can feel like a massive relief, especially if you've been late to work too many times because of the bus driver. Vehicle ownership is convenient at times, but as with most things, it doesn't come stress-free.

In this article, we'll cover some reasons why you should consider getting a car, but we'll also talk about some of the downsides. In case you decide that an automobile is not for you, we'll offer some alternative ways that you can get around town.

What to Consider Before Buying a Car

Buying a car is a significant investment, and it's not a decision that you want to take lightly. The wrong choice can cost you serious time and energy in the long run. Take some time to think it over and analyze your situation practically!

When it comes to deciding whether or not you're going to purchase a car, ask yourself a few questions:

  • How far is your commute? What's the route like?

  • Do you have a parking space for free, or will you have to pay a lot?

  • Are there any alternative transit options in your area?

  • How much traffic will you have to deal with daily?

If you just moved to a new city, or you aren't familiar with the roads, consider renting a car for a day. This will give you some insight into what it's like to own a car. In big cities, you may think that you prefer to drive, especially when the subway is extra smelly that day, but the fantasy may be better than reality.

The Pros and Cons of Car Ownership

While this pro and con list are far from exhaustive, it's a start. Use it to help you start your own and think about how the ways a car will be an asset, but don't forget to jot down the ideas that it may be a burden.

Pros

  • You leave your house at the time you want to. You won't ever have to try to catch the bus or wait for it at the stop.

  • Some newer cars are designed to be all about comfort. Interiors can be modified to fit your needs. Even older cars can be customized to feel a little more luxurious on the road.

  • It's easier to plan your journey and go to places that are hard to access through public transportation. All in all, you'll have more mobility options.

Cons

  • Cars cost a lot of money. Even if you buy an old car, you may have to invest a lot into repairs and maintenance. Also consider the price of gas, tolls, parking and insurance.

  • If you live in the city, it may be hard to find a secure place to leave your vehicle.

  • While we don't always like to admit it to ourselves, driving can be dangerous. According to https://diamondlaw.ca/practice-areas/car-accidents, accidents can cause not only life-changing injuries but also long-term trauma.

Alternative Methods of Transportation

For many people, a car is the default option of transportation, a necessary item in life. With new technologies and improved infrastructure in many cities, people are becoming more interested in becoming car-free. It's now more accessible in places around the world.

Ridesharing apps like Lyft and Uber make it simpler than ever to get around. These companies are especially helpful if you plan on going out for a drink or two with friends. You don't have to worry about paying for gas and insurance, though the rates can get expensive depending on the time of day.

Taking a bicycle or walking to get to work or the market are two ways to get around that are healthy and good for the environment. Depending on the weather, take some time to get some fresh air.

The Verdict

Having a car is convenient, but it's not necessary for everyone. For many people, especially city dwellers, a vehicle can be more of a burden than a tool. Before you decide to invest, weigh up your options, and take some rental cars for a spin around town to test out your new potential lifestyle.
