When the temperature starts to drop in the fall, most people head inside and spend their time cozy and warm inside their own homes. After all, the holiday season is the season of homemade meals and goodies!

Although spending time indoors with your friends and family watching movies and enjoying hot meals can be a great way to spend the holidays, you should get out in the world too! Whether inside or out, these cold weather activities are a great way to enjoy the season.

Dinner and a Show

If you want to find a way to get out of the house, but you don't want to spend your time huddled up outdoors, there are fun things to do near where you live. If you live next to the city, chances are, you can find a Christmas-themed show that serves dinner.

For example, Pigeon Forge hosts amazing holiday-themed shows and attractions throughout the season. Not to mention, since Pigeon Forge is settled in the Smoky Mountains, it's one of the best places in the United States to experience Christmas.

Dinner and a show is one of the best things you can do during the holiday season. Not only can you make sure the entire family is entertained, you can make family memories, and you don't have to worry about spending all your time cooking a huge meal in the kitchen!

Go Ice Skating

Playing in the snow is a great way to pass the time during the holidays. Unfortunately, you can't always count on snow before Christmas. If the weather is cold, but there isn't any snow on the ground, you can still go ice skating! Outdoor skating rinks are maintained throughout the country, regardless of the snow.

If you live in a warm-weather climate, you may still be able to go ice skating. Many rinks can be found indoors across the country, which is a great way to get that cold-weather feeling, even if you don't live in a cold weather environment.

Get Your Own Tree

There's no denying that a fake Christmas tree is the most convenient way to celebrate Christmas. Picking up a real Christmas tree is also relatively easy, even if setting it up is a challenge, but neither experiences can compare to chopping down your own Christmas tree.

Your family will create lifelong memories because there's just something special about going out into nature and picking your own tree.

Cutting your tree down at the Christmas tree farm also comes with other benefits that include:

  • It often costs less than precut trees.

  • Freshly cut trees last longer than precut trees.

  • It's a great way to support family farms.

  • It's the perfect place to find fresh wreaths and garlands too.

Play Outside

Although the outdoors can be chilly during the holiday season, there's a lot of beauty to see. There's a lot of fun to be had too! Make some time during Thanksgiving or Christmas to head outside and play.

Playing outside in the winter is as easy as heading into the backyard. If you have snow, make a snowman or a snow angel. If you don't have snow, you can go for a nature walk or play bags in the driveway.

Additional ideas include:

  • Snowshoeing

  • Roasting marshmallows on a bonfire

  • Feeding the birds

  • Making snow paint with food coloring

No snow on the ground in your yard? See if you can find a sports park that makes their own snow! You and your family and friends can make memories flying down the hill on a tube or snow skis.

Ride the Polar Express

The Polar Express has become an important part of many families' holiday traditions. That includes both the book and the movie, and if you look near where you live, it could also mean a real-life ride aboard the Polar Express.

A train ride is always fun and memorable, but it's sure to be even more fun and memorable if you take a ride that is themed just for this favorite holiday story. You can find railroad lines across the country that host Polar Express-themed train rides, so you won't have far to go to make this a new Christmas tradition.

Just because the days are shorter and the nights are colder doesn't mean there aren't plenty of fun things for you to do with your friends and family this holiday season! Get out there and enjoy making memories and you just may find you've created a new holiday tradition.
