As homosexuals in the United States celebrated a Supreme Court ruling making gay marriage legal in all 50 states, gays in Istanbul who tried to gather for the city's annual pride parade were met with police violence.

The marchers, adorned in the gay pride movement's rainbow colors, were met with tear gas and water cannons as they tried to gather and march peacefully.

Police made arrests, while their water cannons accidentally created the symbol of the pride movement.

As a large crowd of protesters gathered, a large police presence also began to make itself felt.

Turkish police have regularly attacked any type of protest or public gathering since the Gezi Park protests of 2013.
