There is a lot of sugar in energy drinks that one could ever imagine. A recent survey conducted by a UK campaign group, Campaigners Action on Sugar, warned that the public, especially those below 16 years old should regulate their consumption on energy drinks. The same campaign group also requests that these energy drinks be banned from kids.

The campaign group further revealed that Rockstar, Monster and Red Devil are on top of their list as the ones with the highest sugar content, Daily Mail reports.

In a survey of 197 energy drinks it was found out that 101 drinks contain almost the same amount of sugar that a 100-ml size of Coca-cola has. This is said to be equivalent to nine teaspoons per 330 ml can of Coke.

Further, the news outlet revealed that Rockstar Punched Energy + Guava Tropical Flavour, Rockstar Juiced Energy + Juice Mango Orange Passion Fruit Flavour, Red Devil Energy Drink and Lucozade Energy topped the survey, Beverage Daily said.

Daily Mail, meanwhile, revealed that a 100-ml Sainsbury's Orange Energy Drink contain 15.9 g of sugar and is said to contain the highest amount which is 20 teaspoons of sugar in every 500ml of its product.

Professor Graham MacGregor, chairman of Action on Sugar and professor of cardiovascular medicine at Queen Mary University of London explains that the survey's findings should alert children and how they consume energy drinks.

"Children are being deceived into drinking large cans of this stuff thinking they are going to improve their performance at school, during sports or even on a night out. In reality all they are doing is increasing their risk of developing obesity or type 2 diabetes which will have lifelong implications on their health. Type 2 diabetes is a leading cause of blindness, limb amputation and kidney dialysis - hardly the image of a healthy, active person," Professor MacGregor said as reported by The Guardian.
