Gross as it may sound but eating placenta after giving birth is said to have a number of health benefits to help birthing moms cope with stress from the pain and the loss of fluids that come along with childbirth.

Basically, 'placentophagy' believes that eating the placenta helps boost energy, produce more healthy milk for the baby and regulates hormones that could lead to postpartum depression, NDTV reports.

"Placenta helps to restore your body with vitamins, minerals and hormones. Not rejuvenate you so you can go to parties... just restore you when you feel like a used machine," midwife Claudia Booker once said.

According to BBC, the placenta is fully-packed with nutrients that the mother has carefully been saving for the growing fetus and should not be wasted.

Some are said to have tried adding it with fruits for a nice smoothie hours after birth. Some women also want it cooled and dried to be made into capsules. For the braver ones, they slice or rip parts of the tissue and 'place it by their gums.'

But here is the good news. One does not have to gorge raw placenta as it comes in different forms, including pills, smoothies and a couple of placenta recipes from celebrities who have tried it, NDTV said.

The Independent Placenta Encapsulation Network (IPEN) is said to provide a lot of choices for women. They charge £150 for placenta capsules and £25 for a smoothie drink. Eating raw placenta has a different charge.

Meanwhile, Natasha Hamilton, member of the girl band 'Atomic Kitten' hit the headlines when she claimed that she is 'eating her placenta' after giving birth to her first child, Express said.

In an interview, the singer said, "It was something that my midwife told me about placenta encapsulation. Someone takes it away, dehydrates it and adds some Chinese herbs. It is put in capsules so you can take between three and six a day. It's to help bring in your milk supply and I was going to be breastfeeding anyway so I thought, "Well, fantastic". It can also help against post-natal depression. "

Further, the 32-year old pop star claimed that she never have issues about the pills' taste.

"It had absolutely no taste whatsoever. As I say, it was in a little capsule. I took it with water," she said.

A separate report from E! Online also said that Kourtney Kardashian is eating placenta pills and she described it as 'yummy.'

"Yummy...PLACENTA pills! No joke...I will be sad when my placenta pills run out. They are life changing! #benefits #lookitup," the Kardashian sister wrote together with the photo of the pills.
