Shaving May Help Stall Skin Aging, Dermatologists

Shaving a woman's face has been the trend lately as more and more beauty experts believe that promotes graceful aging. Afraid to grow more hair after shaving? Here is what the dermatologists and experts have to say.

In an article from Daily Mail, Dr Michael Prager, an aesthetic clinician explained the benefits of shaving in the facial area including exfoliation, skin growth and the slowing down of the aging process.

"From an anti-ageing point of view, home shaving has some effect. 'It's like a mild form of microdermabrasion, so encourages collagen production, which reduces wrinkles. Whenever there's trauma to the skin, collagen is stimulated to help cell renewal," Dr. Prager said.

A separate report from ABC News also said that shaving a woman's face is actually called "dermaplaning", a method done in a professional dermatologist's clinic. However, doing it at home, too, is growing more popular.

"It's definitely a thing. One reason men are thought to get fewer wrinkles is that they're constantly exfoliating their faces every time they shave, literally shaving away the outermost layers of skin and encouraging your skin to create new layers," Alexis Wolfer, editor of The Beauty Bean said in an interview.

The belief that shaving can cause facial hair to grow thicker is a myth, according to Dr. Prager.

"The notion that shaving influences regrowth is wrong. Cutting off hair above the root won't cause any feedback to the follicle, which is the live part that produces the hair and sits below the skin," he said during the interview from the British tabloid.

Kerry Benjamin (a professional skin expert) in a report by Yahoo News, also supported this claim saying, "Your hair grows back the exact same way. You are not changing the structure of your follicle, the color and thickness or your hair will be exactly the same once it has grown out. The fine hair on your face is called vellus hair, and when it is shaved, it grows back the same way."

Further, Kerry suggested that shaving should be done when the face is dry.

"The main purpose for shaving is exfoliation and removing the baby vellus hairs, this is best achieved with dry skin."

However, the news sources pointed out that a different kind of razor like micro razors are recommended in this process.

Yahoo also recommended that aside from the special razor, women might also want to use hydrating serum, moisturizer and an SPF for best results.
