Sam Smith dominated the recently-concluded Grammys 2015 on Sunday as he won four awards Best Pop Vocal Album, Best New Artist, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year. As for his winning piece, 'Stay With Me', the soul singer shared to the crowd that a personal note about the song.

"I want to thank the man who this record is about, who I fell in love with last year. Thank you so much for breaking my heart, because you got me four Grammys," Smith via Vulture

Before saying those lines, he confessed some of his setbacks before his recent status.

"Before I made this record, I was doing everything to try to get my music heard... I tried to lose weight and I was making awful music. It was when I started to be myself that the music flowed," the singer said in a report from BBC.

Songs that compete for Song of the Year category includes: Meghan Trainor's "All About that Bass," Sia's "Chandelier," Hozier's "Take Me to Church" and Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off."

Stay With Me is the result of the collaboration among Smith and other songwriters James Napier and William Phillips.

According to Mashable, the hit single has faced a minor controversy back in July last year when a Youtube user made a video showing the tonal similarities between Smith's song and "I Won't Back Down," the first single from Petty's first solo album, 1989's Full Moon Fever.

Petty, who considered it as a 'musical accident' and writing partner Jeff Lynne are said to have been receiving royalties since the issue was brought up in public.

Meanwhile, the22-year old singer lost the Best Album category with Beck's "Morning Phase" album outwitting "The Lonely Hour."
