Google has sent out invites for a mysterious event on September 15 but reserved the launch details for later.

Google, the world's largest internet search titan, is planning to host an event on September 15 to make "an exciting new announcement." The cryptic invitation with just the launch date and time was shared without any specific details. According to media reports, the event will be held in India but the city is unknown at the moment. The event will likely debut  the first bunch of Android One smartphones, according to NDTV.

Google announced Android One, company's low-cost  devices running stock Android, at the Google I/O conference in June. The web giant has not talked much about it since, but a new invitation for an event might be the place to reveal more details about its sub $100 phones. Choosing India as the location for the event adds more credence to the release of Android One smartphones, which are mainly aimed at emerging markets.

The details on the Android One smartphones are few but the Mountain View-based tech giant has partnered with Indian smartphone making companies Karbonn, Micromax and Spice as launch partners. It is expected that more Indian companies have already joined the fleet, the NDTV report added.

Beside the low price point, Sundar Pichai, Senior Vice President, Android, Chrome and Apps at Google, revealed during Google I/O that the new budget smartphones will carry minimum "locally relevant" apps. Google will closely supervise the software that goes into each phone in exchange for offering automatic updates directly to the handsets. This means any Android update will first arrive on Android One handsets, like it does on Nexus and Google Play devices, Tech Radar reports.
