One in every two mobile phones activation in US from October 1 to December 31 was iPhone, according to a survey report.

The survey report of consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) stated that 50 percent of smartphone users activated their phone with iPhone. Samsung accounted 26 percent of the smartphone activations while LG held 11 percent.

The report added that 25% of the Samsung customers and 18% of the LG consumers have activated their phone by switching into an iPhone.

Interestingly, no other mobile-phone maker could muster even 5 percent of the activations. The survey result is a clear indication that competing Apple and Samsung in the U.S. is a daunting task.

"Apple had virtually double the sales of Samsung, and five times that of LG. No other brand accounted for as much as 5 percent of U.S. sales," said Josh Lowitz, CIRP partner and co-founder. "The Amazon Fire and Blackberry smartphones registered slight share, which we attribute to random sample fluctuation as much as actual sales."

Lowtiz added that Apple's surge was fueled by the launch of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus in September.

The report further found that about 86 percent of the new activation came from current iPhone users upgrading a new devices - illustrating the loyalty towards the brand.

The next financial earning report of Apple will be on Jan 27.
