Starting pitcher Ryan Vogelsong will stay in San Francisco for one more year. Sources reported that the free-agent right-hander and the Giants have agreed to a one-year deal worth $4 million on Friday. The contract includes $3 million in performance bonuses.

"When a decision came down, everything kept leading me back to San Francisco. It's where I'm supposed to be," said Vogelsong, 37, "I've always considered myself a Giant. There's not really any place I'd rather play."

"We appreciate Ryan signing back with us," senior vice president and general manager of the Giants, Brian Sabean said according to the San Francisco Gate. "He's been on our radar all offseason, though we at times have pursued other options, we know what Ryan has brought to the table and his contributions have not only been timely but I think contagious to the organization. I think some of our consistency, the hallmark of success is competition and depth, and he certainly has created that by re-signing with us."

Vogelsong was reportedly very close to signing with another team. However, after the veteran met with Houston general manager A.J. Hinch, Vogelsong decided to stay put.

"Some things happened I just wasn't comfortable with. Negotiations kind of broke down after that," Vogelsong commented.

He added, "As soon as I re-engaged with the Giants, it was like a big weight had been lifted off my shoulders and that was where I was supposed to be. And it kind of hit the ground running from there. Like I said, it's just kind of weird how things work themselves out."

Vogelsong, who passed his physical, finished last season 8-13 in 32 starts. He posted a .400 ERA and threw 151 strikeouts over 184.2 innings pitched. He was a part of a stellar rotation that included Madison Bumgarner, Jake Peavy, Tim Hudson, Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain. Vogelsong will most likely start for Cain, who underwent elbow surgery.

"In the past, I've told you guys that I take the ball when they tell me to take it and I give it back when they take it from me," Vogelsong said in regards to the fact that the Giants have five starting pitchers. "That's not going to change no matter what role I'm in."

Giants manager Bruce Bochy stated that Lincecum, a two-time NL Cy Young Award Winner, will most likely be starting off the rotation on opening day.
