Microsoft announced free Windows 10 upgrade for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users, but looks like users of Windows RT will be left out in the cold. According to a report from The Verge, 'Surface Pro 3 and "entire Surface Pro lineup" will get the update to Windows 10, but Windows RT won't get the full OS.'

"We are working on an update for Surface, which will have some of the functionality of Windows 10. More information to come," added Microsoft, implying that Surface RT and Surface 2 are not going to get Windows 10 upgrade.

Situation similar to this occurred with the release of Windows Phone 8 that left no direct upgrade path for Windows Phone 7. Later Microsoft released Windows Phone 7.8 for existing Windows 7 that added some functionality but most of the new features were available on Windows Phone 8 devices.

In late 2013, companies like Dell, Lenovo Asus and Samsung all bailed on the ARM-based operating system and Microsoft was only company left that made Windows RT.

Not much has been said about Windows RT over the past year and chances are that it might be finally dead.
