The process any society has to ensure that doctors who take care of patients' health are duly trained and knowledgeable in their fields, with the right set of skills and abilities to practice their profession is through the establishment of strict compliance and ethical standards. In Mexico, this is achieved through a peer certification process, established by medical councils, which in turn must be governed by the State Councils of Primary Care. Through this process, doctors can be certified as having the necessary knowledge to treat patients. This certification must be renewed every five years.

How Do You Know If Your Physician Or Surgeon Has The Required Certification?

All physicians or surgeons that practice their specialties in Mexico must be certified and recertified every five years by the CONACEM (The National Council for Medical Specialties). Once a doctor has been certified by this institution, they obtain their license and are allowed to practice and treat patients int heir field. There are several online sites that allow you to verify the status of your doctor's license and recertification.

What Training Do Plastic Surgeons In Mexico Receive?

The training of a plastic surgeon begins in medical school (approximately 6 years), followed by three or four years of training in General Surgery and finally three years in Plastic Surgery (Aesthetic and Reconstructive). At the end of this specialization, doctors will present a written and oral exam of a high degree of difficulty to ratify their knowledge. After this, new doctors receive a certification of their professional capacity that is granted by the Mexican Council of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery. This medical association is formed by professors of postgraduate courses in this specialty. Once certified, the surgeon continues to prepare in this specialty by attending courses, lectures, and conferences, both nationally and internationally. Plastic surgeons who meet these qualifications may request membership in the AMCPER (Mexican Association of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery).

What Should You Look For When Considering Plastic Surgery In Mexico?

Mexico is well regarded as a plastic surgery center. Still, besides the lower cost, which is definitively an attractive enough reason to consider plastic surgery in Mexico, you should look for a first-class clinic to have your procedure like the Riviera Institute. A clinic that is hidden in a backstreet may offer you better prices but the results may not be what you expect. It may be worth it for you to visit the clinic prior to your surgery, interview the surgeon and walk around the facility. Check your doctor's credentials and, if possible, talk to a few patients to get a clearer idea of their results.

Additional Considerations

Being able to combine plastic surgery with a nice vacation is something to consider. The Riviera Institute for Plastic Surgery is located in the beautiful city of Cancun where you can not only find spectacular beaches but plenty of archeological attractions. Think about expanding your stay to give yourself the opportunity to visit Tulum, Uxmal and Chichen Itza with their unforgettable Mayan pyramids. These sites feature a combination of jungle shade, spatial surroundings, and first-class nearby accommodations while offering you the peace and quiet you search for while recovering from your procedure.
