"Doctor Who" will premiere its tenth season in April 2017 but prior to that, a Christmas special will air this month. Lead star Peter Capaldi recently talked about the upcoming Christmas episode titled "The Return of Doctor Mysterio" and addressed his rumored departure from the long-running sci-fi series.

"Doctor Who" Season 10 will feature a new companion named Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie). In a recent appearance on "The Andrew Marr Show," Capaldi didn't exactly say that he will leave the series but he hinted that he has no plans of exiting the TARDIS soon.

"I didn't want it to change my life much, but it does," the 58-year-old actor said of portraying the Time Lord, as quoted by Screen Rant. "But when I go out into the world, I don't want to escape the idea that I'm Doctor Who. And it's finite, you know. I won't be 'Doctor Who' forever. There'll be a day when people don't come and say hello. Not for a long time, I hope."

"Doctor Who" showrunner Steven Moffat will leave the show after Season 10, with "Broadchurch" creator Chris Chibnall taking on the position in Season 11, according to Digital Spy. Moffat said that Season 10 will have 12 episodes and will feature Michelle Gomez and Matt Lucas as Missy and Nardole, respectively.

Moffat's last "Doctor Who" hurrah will be next year's Christmas episode. In November, The Mirror claimed that Capaldi's Twelve would be replaced by a "younger" and "dashing male lead" much like David Tennant's Tenth Doctor.

Capaldi also touched on the upcoming "Doctor Who" Christmas special in the interview. The actor believes that the show's annual Christmas episodes have "a special role to fill" because people flock to watch it, making the series somewhat responsible of a holiday "tradition."

For Capaldi, the "Doctor Who" Christmas specials serve as "a nostalgic reminder to people who perhaps don't watch the show that it's still around." The Christmas episodes may also remind people of their childhood because the TARDIS and the aliens are still there, as well as the mysterious man that operates the telephone booth-style spaceship.

The "Doctor Who" Christmas special will center on a superhero character named Grant/The Ghost (Justin Chatwin). "The Return of Doctor Mysterio" airs on Christmas Day, 5:45 PM, on BBC One.
