It's normal for games to incorporate themes that depict the current festivities in the real world. Since it's Christmas, Overwatch decided to implement a Christmas-theme in the game. Unfortunately, one backfired to the developers.

In celebration of the Yuletide Holiday season, Overwatch rolled out an update to the game where players will experience a festive theme with the Winter Wonderland seasonal event. The Winter Wonderland seasonal event features a snowy battlefield for players to brawl over. Loot crates have been replaced with a decorative present box complete with a ribbon. The characters are also celebrating the Christmas cheer by wearing Christmas-themed skins when battling with other heroes.

However, one character backfired to Blizzard. Mei's legendary skin received criticisms over her Christmas-themed skin. Fans said that her Christmas-skin is "not so legendary" since the skin looks like her usual look just patterned up for the Winter Wonderland event. They are complaining that Mei's legendary skin doesn't deserve a legendary status since there's barely any change for her. Legendary skins usually have some sort of changes in their aesthetics and as for Mei's skin, not much has changed; unless people will count the snowman Ice Block for Mei.

Game Director Jeff Kaplan offered their apologies over at the Overwatch forums for the disappointing design on Mei's legendary skin. "We just sort of make a gut call based off of what we think is cool," said Kaplan. The developers patterned Mei's Christmas skin based on the community suggestions months ago for their winter event. They also said that they are now planning to redesign Mei's legendary skin and will be out sometime next year. Expect an overhaul of Mei's aesthetics for her legendary skin since legendary skins tend to have cooler aesthetics than the usual skins.
