Expect pre-orders (and actual from-the-shelf purchases) for the most anticipated games of 2017 to pile up once the new year comes in. The expectations have been high since their respective launches were announced last year, and gamers have been counting the days until the following titles fill up the shelves.

"Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" is the one title that keeps coming up in several pre-release reviews and forecasts. As BGR puts it, the popularity of the game doesn't have to be explained by those who had gone through the earlier versions. The design knocks you off your feet, and the entire universe opens one surprise after another to the gamers bent on exploring it.

On the other hand, IG Critic says that game creator Nintendo has some serious courting to do. A lot of its hardcore gamer fans were ticked off when the company focused more on developing and promoting its disastrous Wii U project. Now that Nintendo has got its game back (pun intended), the more forgiving fans are happy, and the less forgiving ones want to see what it can offer as payback. Safe to say though, fans on both sides of the divide are looking forward to this version of "Zelda."

"Mass Effect: Andromeda" is another favorite because of the buzz that has spread about its smooth gameplay and the dreamy, exotic landscapes in its strange new worlds.

What tops "Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" in BGR's list is "Red Dead Redemption 2,"Rockstar's foray into the wild wild West. Gun-slinging, barroom brawls, and train-and-horse chases may be in vogue again. Don't be quick to dismiss a genre that many have called obsolete. The blockbuster success of HBO's TV series "Westworld" shows that it just might be angling for a comeback, and "Red Dead Redemption 2" has gamers chomping at the bit.

For its number one choice, IG Critic favors "Pyre," which has its design roots in '90s fantasy and its storyline foundation in "Dungeons and Dragons."

The other games that are heavy favorites are "Persona 5," "Horizon City Dawn," "Nier: Automata," "Scalebound," and "Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night." These are the ones to watch out for in 2017, weeks after you've played through the hottest games released in December 2016.
