The great detective "Sherlock Holmes" is pretty popular these days that if can't be helped if the names of Robert Downy Jr. and Benedict Cumberbatch are dragged in the comparison game. The two actors both played the characters but they weren't the only ones who played the part?

People loves Robert Downey Jr. and Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes but there are some actors who gave life to Detective Sherlock Holmes way earlier than both of them. Basil Rathbone  for The Hound of the Baskervilles (1939), Douglas Wilmer for Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes (1964-1965) ,Peter Cushing (1968), Robert Stephens(1970), Nicol Williamson(1976), Christopher (1979), Vasily Livanov  (1979-1986), Ian Richardson (1983), Nicholas Rowe (1985), Jeremy Brett,  (1984-94), Rupert Everett (2004), Jonny Lee Miller (2012), and Ian McKellen Mr. Holmes (2015).

Wondering what year both Robert Downey Jr. and Benedict Cumberbatch first played the role? 2009 and then 2010, respectively. Robert appeared in movies which were entitled "Sherlock Holmes" while Benedict appeared in the series entitled "Sherlock". Today, the two actors are compared as to who is the better as both of them are also doing well as the superheroes of the "Avengers".

Here are some observations as to who played the role better.  Benedict depends on his observation skills while Robert showed that he have his own erratic skills of observing. Benedict was showcased as somebody who makes his brains work while Robert portrayed a Sherlock Holmes that is smart and a master of combat. With this, one would say Robert is a more appealing Sherlock Holmes but another observation tells otherwise.

Between the two, Robert Downey Jr. and Benedict Cumberbatch, the latter might be the best suit for Sherlock Holmes, if you relate it to the introductory description of the Sherlock Holmes book. In the book, it was said that Sherlock is rather six feet tall, excessively lean, sharp thin eyes, hawk-like nose, and have a prominent chin. With that, one would conclude that it is talking about Benedict Cumberbatch rather than Robert Downey Jr.

Despite arguments to who is better between Robert Downey Jr. and Benedict Cumberbatch, it must be noted that a movie must be around 2 hours to conclude and a tv series has a lot of years to do so, the script has affected the way roles can be portrayed. Robert Downey Jr.  was reported to have been working on the third movie of "Sherlock Holmes" while the season 4 of Benedict Cumberbatch's "Sherlock" is on its way. Either way, both gentlemen gave the Sherlock Holmes character justice in how they portrayed their roles.
