The American police procedural crime drama television series Criminal Minds is created by Jeff Davis. On its season 12, the cast from the previous season will return except for Shemar Moore who plays the role of Derek Morgan who left in the season eleven of the show. CSI Miami's Adam Rodriguez is set to fill Morgan's void in the next season as Luke Alvarez, a new recruit to the BAU and is tasked to help in the capture of the escaped killer from the previous season.

Last August 10, it was announced that Aisha Tyler will be promoted as regular for the twelfth season. On the other hand, there were claims that the American actor and director Thomas Gibson had been suspended and will be out from the show. The said issue is due to the on-set altercation between Gibson and one of the producers. He was also cut to direct one of the episodes in the twelfth season and will definitely mark his last and final appearance as Aaron Hotchner who is a Supervisory special agent and the unit chief of the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit.

On September 30, another announcement was out about Gibson's character will be replaced by Damon Gupton who is best known for his series regular roles in Deadline, Prime Suspect, The Divide and The player. Gupton will play as a special agent Stephen Walker who is a seasoned profiler from the Behavioral Analysis Program (counter-intelligence division of FBI) and will bring his undercover skills to the BAU.

The television writer, producer and story editor Erica Messer stated that their BAU family is getting bigger and the Criminal Minds cast and crews were happy and excited to finally work with Damon. He was recently introduced to the audiences last December 7 during the "Scarecrow" episode. Damon then received random reactions from fans that were amazed and some other fans who still want Thomas Gibson back to the show.
