"Sherlock" Season 4 is set to return to the small screens soon. However, while fans are delighted that the most popular detective is back, they are also saddened by the report that this could be the last season for Benedict Cumberbatch in playing the role.

In an interview with GQ, Benedict Cumberbatch commented on the reports about "Sherlock" and its last series. Although he never confirmed nor denied, his comment suggests that yes, season 4 could be the show's last run.

According to the "Doctor Strange" star, they are already on the point where what they have done is something complete and something that would be difficult to follow on. He said that it is the end of the era. This trigger reports that perhaps, this will be Cumberbatch's last season in playing Sherlock Holmes.

The actor added that he wants to revisit the show but added that in the near future they will have everything that they want to crack on with. The thought of not playing the role again is "galling" for Cumberbatch.

Of course, fans know that great shows like "Sherlock" will eventually end. However, no one expected it to end so soon after just four seasons. Anyway, this is still not confirmed and there are chances that there could be more seasons in the future.

Meanwhile, speaking of the new season, Steven Moffat teases that the new season will present answers to questions that nobody asked. He added that the new season will also be about consequences. Fans can expect hilarious, exhilarating and bloody frightening scenes.

However, it seems that season 5 has a future still. When asked what the viewers will feel after watching season 4, Moffat teases about the next season. "Hmmm... desperate for series 5. We're certainly going to put them through the mill. It's going to be more of an emotional upheaval," he told Entertainment Weekly.

Per Radio Times, the new season will be aired weekly. "The Six Thatchers" airs on New Year's Day, "The Lying Detectives" follows on January 8 and the untitled season finale will air on January 15.
