The Last of Us 2 storyline focus on hate and revenge. It will be Ellie's journey in killing every single member of the fireflies gang. Also, it is very evident that Ellie will be the main character for the game. There are rumors that Joel is actually dead. This theory is based on Joel's statement on the preview which basically allowing Ellie to take over her own path, makes him a fragment of Ellie's imagination.

Another clue which leads to Joel being dead on the second installment of The Last of Us is the story's timeline. It is said by Trippedmedia the story takes a six-year time skip. A prediction by the same source says that within the six-year timeframe, Joel could have been killed by the fireflies gang.

The location of the story is still unknown, but theories say that it takes place in a countryside where the Cordyceps Brain Infection takes place. Also, the timeline of the story told Ellie's age. She is already 19 years old, and she is more revenge-driven.
