Say Goodbye to Japan's Giant Gundam Robot

Japan's famous Giant Robot, who has been standing since 2009 is going to be taken down on March 2017. The Gundam will be celebrating its fifth year in February 2017 before it will be taken down.

Japan, who is famous for having generations of giant robots in their arsenal, erected a 1:1 scale model of a Gundam in Odaiba, Tokyo. The Gundam RG 1/1 RX 78-2 Ver GFT is the name of the giant Gundam and was piloted by Amuro Ray from the Mobile Suit Gundam. Since then, the Gundam attracted a total of four million one hundred fifteen thousand fans and tourists who would want to see this life-sized robot.

However, it was announced that the giant Gundam will have its final moments to the public before it will be taken down this coming March 5, 2017. No further information was said for the reason of taking down this giant. However, it was hinted that Bandai Namco will be releasing an actual moving Gundam! Dubbed as "Gundam Global Challenge", Bandai will be challenging themselves to actually build a moving robot in the future.

Bandai Co. CEO's, Kazunori Ueno, announced that "the time has finally come for the world to actually see a Gundam robot that is capable of moving." They're also asking fans of the franchise to submit their suggestions for the project and production will start in 2018.

Before settling in Odaiba, Tokyo, the giant Gundam was first launched in Tokyo back in 2009 as part of the "Green Tokyo Project." The giant Gundam was then torn down and transferred to Shizuoka in 2010. Shizuoka is famous because it is where Gundam model kits or "Gunpla" are being manufactured. The giant Gundam made its final move in Odaiba, Tokyo in 2012 before it will be taken down next year.


In addition to the giant's farewell to the public, Gundam Front Tokyo merchandise will also bid their farewells to their fans on April 5, 2017.
