If you are looking for inspiration to lose weight this year, Dennis the Dachshund in Ohio is just what you are looking for.

Dennis weighed 56 pounds a year ago and was struggling to even move thanks to the generously large portions of human food and dog treats. Combined with lack of adequate exercise, he soon began to pile on. His increasing weight had put him at serious risk of illness, Daily Mail reported.

Brooklyn Burton, Dennis's owner, was determined to help her dog get back in shape. She told ABC News that a regimen of strict diet and exercise helped her dog trim and lose weight. His weight loss to 13 pounds was gradual. He can now shoot up the stairs and play like any other dog.

"He now can go up and down the steps he was never able to do that. Runs even faster. He thinks he rules the house. We should not be feeding dogs people food and overfeeding them and giving them excessive amount of treats. And just like humans they need proper diet and exercise to live a good healthy life," Burton said.

Though Dennis's has lost weight, his transformation is not complete. His obese former-self left him with sagging skin after weight loss. After a skin surgery to get rid of it, his struggle with obesity would end.

Dennis is not the first dog to fight obesity. Last year another dachshund Obie made headlines after he lost 50 pounds and underwent a tummy tuck.
