Former boxing pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather isreportedly in talks to fight UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor.

The two men had purportedly talked about facing each other under boxing rules. Mayweather was even said to have offered "The Notorious" a sum of $50 million for a possible fight in Las Vegas on New Year's Eve. But in late September, "Money Mayweather" himself closed the doors on the said idea, noting that it was "time to move on" from the fight.

McGregor is currently billed as the biggest draw in professional mixed martial arts today. He is slated to headline UFC 205 next, when he faces lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez at the legendary Madison Square Garden in New York City. It will be the UFC's first even in the state of New York, since the ban on MMA was lifted in April.

Mayweather, on the other hand, continues to be mentioned in boxing circles today, despite being retired. Some of the names that were pitted against him were that of Manny Pacquiao, Danny Garcia, and middleweight knockout artist Gennady Golovkin. For his part, Floyd Jr. says he remains retired and would want to focus on fight promotion instead.

But as far as the Mayweather-McGregor match-up goes, UFC president Dana White is apparently interested in making it. In an interview with Skip Bayless of FOX Sports 1, the brash UFC executive says he is looking to make the said fight, but is not willing to give Mayweather too much leverage. With that said, he is stipulating that there should be "punches, kicks, and elbows" involved.

"You can't say it's not interesting," White said.

While MMA fighters crossing to boxing may have been more successful, the same thing cannot be said when the situation is turned around. In 2010, multi-time world champion James Toney faced off against UFC legend Randy Couture. "The Natural" ended up making quick work of Toney, ending the fight via first round arm-triangle choke.
