US Dept. Of Energy Shows Its Sense of Humor with This Tweet For Stranger Things' Barb

For fans of Netflix's hit series Stranger Things, the U.S Department of Energy (DOE) came across a sinister organization up to no good. Of course, reality is much different and DOE took it upon itself to clear the air.

Paul Lester an official from its Public Affairs department wrote a cheeky blog post, "What 'Stranger Things' Didn't Get Quite-So-Right About the Energy Department," soon after the series hit the airwaves talking about how the series got a lot of things sort of wrong and described what the department actually did do.

The department has continued to show a sense of humour with a tweet demanding justice for Barb, the much-lamented tertiary character who didn't make it in the series.

DOE was responding to a tweet by a reporter for the Washington Free Beacon, Lachlan Markay who had filed a Freedom of Information Act request to get internal documents discussing the series. He got back a whole stack of documents mostly emails discussing the depiction of the organisation on the series and employees' responses to it.

The emails show a healthy interest in the series by the staffers with some complaining that Lester's blog post had spoilers that ruined the series and others talking about how the department was shown in "sinister (but awesome)" light.

One email has references to some interesting tidbits, but unfortunately, large parts of it were redacted.

"We actually do make weapons," an employee John Larue notes in the email, adding later, "There is some really eyebrow-raising stuff in the history of the atomic energy commission."

The U.S. Energy secretary Ernest Moniz added to the discussion in Chelsea Handler's Netflix talk show, saying "I will note that we do work in parallel universes."

He added in DOE's blog post, "We support theoretical physicists/cosmologists through the Office of Science High Energy Physics program, some of whom almost certainly are doing a fair amount of research on parallel universes."
