After nine seasons, it would seem like Finn the Human and Jake the Dog will be bidding farewell for good.

Just recently, Cartoon Network had officially announced that the landmark animated series "Adventure Time" will be heading to its final season, prior to a series ender in 2018.

Created by Pendleton Ward in 2010, "Adventure Time" is set in a post-apocalyptic world inhabited by various species, mutated animals, and medieval-styled kingdoms. It centers on the exploits of best friends Finn and Jake as they undertake a slew of surreal and fantastical adventures in the land of Ooo.

Receiving critical acclaim for its unique animated style, coupled by its visuals and a mixture of different themes and tropes, the show bagged numerous awards - including six Emmys, two BAFTAs, and a Peabody Award.

As a result, "Adventure Time" reignited the spark for Cartoon Network, paving way for a string of similarly patterned content which became hit shows in their own, amiable ways.

The network's chief content officer, Rob Sorcher commented on the announcement, "Adventure Time changed the definition of what a kids' TV series could be, and it had a resounding impact on popular culture around the world."

He also mused about the pride he holds for the amount of work the team did for the show. "Adventure Time was a passion project for the people on the crew who poured their heart into the art and stories. We tried to put into every episode something genuine and telling from our lives, and make a show that was personal to us, and that had jokes too! I'm really happy that it connected with an audience for so long. It's a special thing, I think."

Prior to "Adventure Time's" inevitable conclusion, "Regular Show" is also en route to its ending, as previously announced by the network last month.
