Justin Lin will be the new director for the third installment of Paramount Pictures' "Star Trek," which is reportedly scheduled to be released in 2016. Lin got the job after director Roberto Orci left the post earlier this month. Orci was a co-writer in the first two installments of the "Star Trek" series and will still be a part of the writing process for the third film.

The first two Star Trek movies were directed by J.J. Abrams, who decided to focus on the new Star Wars movie, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," instead.

Lin is most widely known for directing the "Fast and Furious" franchise. He has directed "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift," 2009's "Fast & Furious," "Fast Five" and "Fast & Furious 6." Lin has also directed several episodes of the TV show, "Community." He will direct two episodes in the second season of "True Detective."

Lin was born in Taipei, Taiwan. He grew up in Orange County, CA and attended the University of California, San Diego for two years before transferring to the University of California, Los Angeles. He earned his MFA in film directing at the UCLA Film School. Lin's films have grossed about $2 billion worldwide.

Lin is represented by CAA, Cinetic Management and Sloss Eckhouse Law Co. His reps confirmed the news on Dec. 22.
