In a Youtube-only press conference held this Thursday, Nintendo announced that Super Mario Maker will be available for the 3DS on December 2, 2016. According to IGN, This version will feature 100 Nintendo-made courses, and will also let players access Wii U courses online. While this brings the element of portability into the game, there are restrictions.

According to Ars Technica, perhaps the most pressing limitation is the fact that players will not be able to share courses online, which was a feature available in the Wii U version. As an alternative, sharing and other social functions can be done via local wireless and Street Pass.

Players will also be able to locally send partially finished courses to friends to collaborate, as per IGN. However, due to technical limitations, not all of the courses created with the Wii U will be compatible with the 3DS version.

Players will also be unable to search for courses via course ID, as per Kotaku. Finally, Amiibo support and the Mystery Mushroom power-up, which allow players to disguise Mario as characters from themed levels from the original Super Mario Bros will not be available in the 3DS version.

Super Mario Makers was released for the Wii U last year in September, and quickly became popular for its course designing and sharing features. Because players were able to share the courses they created online, it gave them a near infinite amount of levels, and allowed the game to have excellent replayability.

With the access to online courses limited, there is some concern that the game will lose its replayability. Despite this, fan response has been positive, with several posting excited tweets over the game.

Aside from Super Mario Maker, Nintendo also showed some brief demo footage for an upcoming Pikmin game for 3DS, which will be launched in the spring of 2017. Other games which were announced to be launched in spring with 3DS versions next year are Mario Sports Superstars and Yoshi's Wooly World.
