Season 7 finale of 'The Vampire Diaries' left fans with a perturbing mystery. After Damon and Enzo were affected by the monster in the vault, every fan has been curious to know their fate.

Theories are swirling around in good numbers and one says that Stefan's promise to Elena has got a lot to do with his resurrection. Stefan is that one person who truly believes that Damon is still alive inside the possessed body and his belief stems from the promise he made to Elena in the journal.

The Season 7 finale showed him writing to Elena in the journal, wherein he wrote that he would find a way to bring back Damon. The strength and conviction of his promise has made him believe in his abilities to restore Damon back to his previous self. Even if all hope is lost, he will have to keep trusting his belief.

It may be mentioned here that in the last episode, Damon turned around to see, after hearing Elena's voice and that is when disaster struck. The monster took over Damon's body as well as mind. Enzo underwent the same fate when he ventured inside the vault, searching for Damon.

After that, all three i.e. Stefan, Caroline and Bonnie have been looking for the missing duo and Season 8 will focus on their search to bring the vampires back. As for the duo, the two are certainly no longer the good people, viewers have known and loved, in all the seasons.

But Stefan is determined of his brother's survival despite there being no visible signs of former Damon's existence.

Many are of the view that Season 8 will prove to be the last season of the series. However, CW network's president Mark Perowitz has said that no final decision has been taken on this front and all depends on the reaction of the fans towards Season 8.

So, until then, things are just going to revolve around speculations and guesses.
