In a press release from the Ramsey Minnesota office, Prince's death has been reported to be an accident due to "fentanyl toxicity" through "the decedent's self-administered fentanyl," which is an opioid. This controlled substance has a high risk for addiction and dependence, though it is used to cure pain.

Various tests show that Prince was killed by an opioid overdose, according to a law enforcement official. The well-known legendary musician, 57, had been found dead in his huge Minneapolis estate on April 21.

On condition of anonymity, the law enforcement official said he is not supposed to talk to the press.

The Prince had an appointment with an addiction specialist doctor, Dr. Howard Kornfeld, on April 22, just a day after he died. As the expert could not see Prince quickly enough, he sent his son, who carried buprenorphine, used to treat opioid addiction. But the son found Prince dead and called 911.

A lawyer for the Kornfelds confirmed that he is scared the son will be charged "but has confidence the son will not be prosecuted since he was the person who called authorities."

"DEA agents obtained a search warrant for Prince's Paisley Park estate earlier this month, revealing that Prince had met with a doctor at his home the day before he died," reports PEOPLE. "The papers did not disclose which illness Prince was diagnosed with, but indicated that the doctor had performed tests on the star and prescribed him with medication.

His lawyer L. Londell McMillan insisted that he was "not on any drugs that would be cause for concern," and he lived a clean lifestyle, insiders said he habitually used Percocet.

After his death, his family members have tried to settle his $100-million-plus estate. The judge in charge of the case said that genetic tests from his blood sample could help to identify the person who is entitled to inherit his estate.

"At least a couple of people claiming to be Prince's children from unmarried liaisons have filed claims. If they can establish parentage, they would get it all," reports the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
