Over the last few transfer windows Manchester United have chased some of the biggest players in the world, placed mega bids but with the exception of Angel di Maria all those operations ended in failure and almost all of those bids involved players from either Real Madrid or Barcelona. In a fresh turn of events, Manchester United are now trying to sign Barcelona's Brazilian star Neymar this summer and have offered an awe inspiring fee of £145 million for his services, which would make it the most expensive transfer in history if the Catalan club are willing to do business. The reports originated from Brazil, where Neymar's father spoke about the situation to a radio station in the country named COPE,"Manchester United is the side that offered €190m [£145m] for Neymar. He has still two years left on his contract but you can all be calm as my son is so happy here [Barcelona]."

Although his father has stated that Neymar is happy at Barcelona, the player is currently in contract negotiations with the club and the wage has emerged as the sticking point for the player. Barcelona are stretched to the limit as far as their finances are concerned and are unable to pay him more than £77000 per week, which has now opened the door for Manchester United who have offered him a wage of £300,000 per week. However, if Neymar is really going to be in the market then plenty of other clubs might also be in the running and in fact French champions Paris Saint Germain have made him their top target this summer following the exit of their star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

United have been chasing the player since last year and rumours had emerged last year that they had made an £180 million bid for the player but a move did not materialise. However, the situation is quite different this time due to the wage situation. Manchester United's huge bid is a clear indicator that they want to blow other clubs out of the water.
