When Sir Alex Ferugson speaks on anything remotely related to football, then people listen and when he speaks on perhaps the most inflammable topic in present day football then one can expect the whole world to listen to what the great man has to say. Recently, the Scot spoke on the simmering argument about Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo and on who was superior to the other in terms of ability and this is a debate that has divided people across the football world for close to a decade now without a definitive verdict in place. Like so many others, this is a topic on which very few people want to speak since it is a polarising topic but it is not that Sir Alex has never taken a stand on the relative merits and demerits of the players, but this time he came up with a far more forthright reply that left no room for doubts.

Back in 2012, when Sir Alex was still an active manager, he had refused to pick one over the other and stated,"There is nothing between the two of them, they are both the best players in the world.......I think what we are seeing at the moment is that Messi is an exceptional player from this decade, along with Cristiano. I don't think the rivalry against each other bothers them. I think they have their own personal pride in terms of wanting to be the best and I certainly know that about Cristiano because he played here at United for six years."

However, at a recent event held at the Dublin Convention Centre, the former Manchester United manager was more forthcoming and came out in favour of the player whom he had managed for six seasons at Old Trafford. 'But Ronaldo could play for Stockport County and score a hat-trick. He has everything. He can shoot with both feet, head the ball, he's as brave as a lion, and here's something else people overlook. During my time at Manchester United I was lucky enough to have a lot of people who put in countless extra hours to get better. Gary Neville turned himself from an average footballer into a wonderful one because of his work ethic, as did David Beckham. But Ronaldo used to completely exhaust himself, and still does. He just wanted to be the best in the world.' These comments are surely going to be matters of big debates for some time.
