Lenovo is making a change to its Moto X line of devices, replacing the 'X' with 'Z'.

The renaming is reportedly being done to bring branding consistency across products, an exercise underway since Lenovo acquired Motorola Mobility. At least two 5.5-inch phones that the Chinese company is working on codenamed Vertex and Vector Thin, will be named Moto Z Play and Moto Z Style. Reports have also suggested branding changes to Verizon Wireless' Droid phones which also feature 'Z' edition.

Additionally, Lenovo is banking on name changes to its modules. Word has it they won't be called 'amps' anymore but will be recognized as MotoMods.

Lenovo's product positioning has raised questions and concerns that it is confusing for a prospective buyer. Analysts have noted that in its bid to cover every-price point, Lenovo has made decision-making complicated. The Moto G is case in point.

In India, Moto G 3rd generation continues to be sold while Moto G4 Plus is expected to launch this week. Interestingly, its lower cousin Moto G4 is expected to arrive next month. There are rumors of an impending launch of Moto G4 Play but a release date remains unknown. While the phones clearly standout in specification and pricing, the existence of all devices in a price range less than $ 60 (around Rs. 4000) is disquieting. Additionally, the launch of these devices too makes it hard to keep track.

Lenovo also has its Vibe brand of phones available at competing prices in the India market. While it may help keep other Chinese and Indian phone-makers away from its market share, the company's naming and pricing can cannibalize Moto sales.

Renaming reports brought to fore analysis that Lenovo is planning to do away with the Motorola brand and that the Moto G range of devices lacks in competition. Will the new Moto X or rather the Moto Z be able to revive Motorola's fortune?
