Toxins released in bee, snake and scorpion venom destroys breast cancer cells and tumors, finds a study.

Scientists at the University of Illinois discovered poisonous chemicals produced by reptiles and insects to protect themselves can be effective in treating breast cancer patients. The researchers separated the useful proteins from the venom and directly delivered it to the cancerous zone to test its efficacy, reports the CBS News.

"We have safely used venom toxins in tiny nanometer-sized particles to treat breast cancer and melanoma cells in the laboratory These particles, which are camouflaged from the immune system, take the toxin directly to the cancer cells, sparing normal tissue," said Dipanjan Pan, study author and researcher at the University of Illinois, reports the Telegraph.

The venom contains peptides and certain proteins that invade cancer cells by fastening to cell walls from tissue samples. These toxins have the potential to harm heart and nerve cells. This can also result in excessive skin bleeding.

"The main point is how we can control their potency. They are potent and that is why they are deadly. If we can use that power in our favor that would be wonderful," adds Dr Pan.

In addition, the research identified 'melittin' a substance found in bee venom, which inhibits the cell division process that leads to spread of tumors. But these compounds are released in minor quantities and difficult to test in labs repeatedly. Therefore, the experts synthesized the therapeutic element of venom in the lab.

Snake and scorpion venom can also serve as a safe cure for cancer and be used as nano-particles. The authors will be researching further on humans to note the efficacy of reptile and insect venom.

The research was presented at the National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in San Francisco.
