Over the years, plenty of top level athletes have been involved in court cases related to a variety of misdemenours starting from drug related crimes to drunken assault and the latest news regarding Lavar Johnson would certainly come as a chock to UFC fans as the star was packed off to prison by a Fresno County judge i relation to an assault on his girlfriend. The star had been in a relationship with his girlfriend for seven years but in a fit of drunken fury, he attacked her girlfriend brutally and now finds himself facing five years in jail following the verdict on Friday, according to reports published by the outlet ABC30. During his appearance in court, Johnson took full responsibility for his actions and expressed regret at what he had done. His lawyer claimed that Johnson had been incensed at discovering that his girlfriend had set a GPS track in his car and was following his every move. In a fate of rage and possibly under the effect of alcohol, he attacked her.

It needs to be noted that he expected the sentence to be no longer than three years, according to his lawyer but the five year sentence would certainly come as a crushing blow for the former UFC star. However, his friends as well as plenty of well wishers endorsed him as a person of gentle nature and had stated that he is a model citizen. One friend named Gary said, "Lavar is not the guy that a lot of people perceive because of his fighting career. He just happened to be good at it, made some good money at it and pursued it. Or the guy that was labeled negatively because of this incident. Lavar is a man with serious flaws, incredible potential and self worth."

His girlfriend, however had been gravely injured and the judge had the final word regarding the verdict. Judge Glenda Allen-Hill said "It does appear there were times when Mr. Johnson could have stopped this offense. That he could have not inflicted the amount of damage that he inflicted on his victim, but he did not."
